Howdy, hackers! If you have recently picked up a copy of Hacking: The Art of Exploitation, 2nd Edition and would like to run an ISO copy of the “live CD” in a virtualized environment feel free to use the following VMX file.

#!/usr/bin/vmware
.encoding = "UTF-8"
config.version = "8"
virtualHW.version = "6"
scsi0.present = "TRUE"
scsi0.virtualDev = "lsilogic"
memsize = "512"
ide1:0.present = "TRUE"
ide1:0.deviceType = "cdrom-image"
ide1:0.fileName = "hacking-live-1.0.iso"
ide1:0.startConnected = "TRUE"
floppy0.startConnected = "FALSE"
ethernet0.present = "TRUE"
ethernet0.connectionType = "nat"
ethernet0.wakeOnPcktRcv = "FALSE"
ethernet0.addressType = "generated"
usb.present = "TRUE"
ehci.present = "TRUE"
sound.present = "TRUE"
sound.autodetect = "TRUE"
svga.autodetect = "TRUE"
pciBridge0.present = "TRUE"
displayName = "livecd"
guestOS = "ubuntu"
virtualHW.productCompatibility = "hosted"

The VMX file works for VMware Fusion and should work for VMware Workstation/Player. This VMX file originated from No Starch Press's website and was modified to use an ISO for the virtual machine (lines 9 and 10). The ISO will need to be in the same directory as the VMX file. If you need a copy of the ISO it can be torrented using this link. If you need more information for configuring CD-ROM settings within VMX files check out Ulli Hankeln’s website!
